Turkish Süper Lig Team of the Season 2022/23: A Return of the Football Spectacle

By Eduard Bănulescu

Turkish Süper Lig supporters love nothing more than witnessing eye-catching dribbles and sensational goals. Recent seasons had been short on this, however. In that respect, the 2022/23 campaign is a return to form for the entire league. The players in our Team of the Season are responsible for returning the league to its core values.

It was also a year when the nation’s biggest clubs returned to the top of the table, when the country was forced to deal with tremendous hardships, and when football offered a much-needed distraction.

This is the FootballCoin Turkish Süper Lig Team of the Season. The players have been decided based on FootballCoin’s complex stats and scoring system.

Who’s in the Turkish Süper Lig Team of the Season 2022/23?

Many Galata players. Muslera, Boey, or Oliveira all make the Team of the Season. This has not been a season for up-and-cming teams like Istanbul Basaksehir.

Galatasaray won its first Super Lig trophy in four seasons. Considering the investments needed to bring established stars like Dries Mertens and Mauro Icardi to the team, this result seems to make sense.

But rivals Fenerbahce provide the league’s MVP. Striker Enner Valencia scored 29 goals this campaign and had defenses waiting in terror. Valencia is surely one of the best forwards in the modern history of the Super Lig.

Goalkeeper

Fernando Muslera (Galatasaray) – 580 points in FootballCoin

Fernando Muslera is an established name. But even he had to fight to prove himself after the disappointment of last season. Back in 2022, Galata finished 13th. Quite an embarrassment!

This year, however, Muslera helped Galatasaray maintain the best defense in the league. The team conceded only 27 goals and Muslera registered a save percentage of 76.2%.

Defenders

Guilherme (Konyaspor) – 459 points

Guilherme Sitya used his considerable experience to help Konyaspor to a comfortable mid-place finish. The Portuguese was his side’s best player, registering nine assists and two goals. It’s the best season of a career that has included stints in Liga I, Ekstraklasa, and 2. Bundesliga.

Arthur Masuaku (Besiktas) – 395 points

Arthur Masuaku was Besiktas’ best player in a season that saw the Black Eagles finish in a disappointing third place, behind traditional rivals Galata and Fener. They will however represent the nation in the Eurppa Conference League.

Masaku proved himself to be one of Super Lig’s top defenders. It wasn’t just his tackling that was impressive. The Congolese former Premier League defender also managed two goals and six assists.

Sacha Boey (Galatasaray) – 380 points

Sacha Boey’s addition to the Team of the Season further goes to prove Galatasaray dominance. As part of the best defense in the Turkish national league, Boey made 31 appearances and averaging 2.8 tackles per game.

Bardacki Abdulkerim (Galatasaray) – 369 points

Bardacki Abdulkerim was another piece of an intricate Galata defensive machine. Leading the central defense alongside Victor Nelsson, Abdulkerim made 1.4 tackles on average per 90 minutes, 1.2 interceptions, and 2.3 clearances. It’s no wonder Galta conceded so lfew goals.

Midfielders

Younes Belhanda (Adana Demirspor) – 552 points

Younes Belhanda proved that he still has the silky skill that made him one Super Lig’s most exciting midfielders all those years back. The former Galatasaray playmaker enjoyed a great season with Adana Demirspor. Belhanda was the team’s top scorer with twelve goals. Besides, Adana finished in an unexpected fourth place.

Kerem Aktorkoglu (Galatasaray) – 528 points

Kerem Aktorkoglu joins many of his colleagues in the Team of the Season. The 24-year-old played mostly on the left wing. He registered nine goals and eleven assists. But it’s his 2.3 dribbles per match that really got fans excited about the player’s development.

Sergio Oliveira (Galatasaray) – 493 points

Sergio Oliveira needed to take on the playmaker role of a team that has included the likes of Gheorghe Hagi or Wesley Sneijder. The Portuguese handled the responsibility well with his passing and freekicks remaining a source of entertainment for fans across the season.

Fernando (Antalyaspor) – 481 points

Fernando brought a bit of skill to Antalyaspor. The team avoided relegation, and the Brazilian’s work was a contributing factor. Fernando scored five, assisted two goals, and was one of the team’s most important players throughout.

Forwards

Enner Valencia (Fenerbahce) – 592 points – Super Lig MVP

Enner Valencia had an amazing season. First, he made a powerful impact on the World Cup stage, scoring three goals for Ecuador. Next, he proceeded to score an astounding 29 goals in the Super Lig, earning the Top Scorer award ahead of players like Mauro Icardi and Mbaye Diagne.

Mbaye Diagne (Fatih Karagumruk) – 549 points

Diagne may have been the runner-up Top Goalscorer in the Super Lig. But his 23 goals were scored while playing for Fatih Karagumruk, not exactly one of Türkiye’s classic football clubs. In fact, the 23 goals scored in 28 appearances were so valuable that they helped the club land seventh place in the league.

This is the forward’s best individual season. Diagne will need to use the next campaign to prove that he is much more than One Season Wonder.
