Serie A continued its rejuvenation phase in the 2021/22 season and maintained its status as one of the most-watched sporting competitions in the world. A lot of this had to do with the football stars involved. The surprising results helped. And, Juventus loosening its grip on the Scudetto played its part as well.

Serie A was also the home of some of the best individual performances. Italian clubs have invested heavily in smart scouting and it has shown.

More still, it was a season that included plenty of goals, and attractive football, not the brand with which older football fans will associate Italian football.

It’s time to factor everything in and to pick our Team of The Season. Here are the best players in Serie A according to FootballCoin fantasy football stats.

Serie A – Team of the Season 2021/22

Vicario Guglieme (FC Empoli) – 1090 points

Vicario Guglieme found out this season that there would be no way to hide as goalkeeper of Empoli. The goalie stepped up. Even though the team struggled for much of the season, Guglieme proved he possessed a safe pair of hands. It got him a place in the Team of the Season and it got Empoli to stay in Serie A.

Lucasz Skorupski (Bologna) – 990 points

Bologna FC is a team built on defensive stability. It is what has allowed manager Sinisa Mihajlovic to make the best out of his existing squad of players. Lucasz Skorupski’s good reflexes and ability to keep out clean sheets throughout the season guarantee him a place on our list.

Cristiano Biraghi (Fiorentina) – 1369 points

Earning the accolade for Best defender in Serie A is no mean feat. Adding to that the distinction of being the best player in Serie A throughout a season is quite remarkable. Cristiano Biraghi achieved this in 2022 at the back of a remarkable season for Fiorentina. Biraghi is a very well-rounded player, adapting especially to the team’s attacking intent. Overall, this also goes to prove that Serie A has become a competition that endorses an offensive mindset.

Theo Hernandez (AC Milan) – 1200 points

Theo Hernandez is arguably one of the best wing-backs in modern football. This year he has added the Scudetto to his resume. As one of AC Milan’s best and brightest players, there is no denying his place in the Team of the Season.

Rui Mario (Napoli) – 1163 points

There may have been people contesting Mario Rui’s involvement for Napoli in the past. But, in the 2021/22 season, Luciano Spaletti managed to get the very best out of the left-back. Napoli battled for the title until the final weeks of the competition. And, Mario Rui grew into a true leader.

Bremer (FC Torino) – 1080 points

Gleison Bremer epitomizes FC Torino’s spirit. At 24 years old, the Brazilian defender truly came into his own this season. Highly offensive, aggressive, and strong in the air, Bremer has all of the attributes to soon become the kind of players over which superclubs are willing to fight it out.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Napoli) – 1055 points

Giovanni Di Lorenzo is, of course, one of Italy’s most promising players. The right-back needed the personal success of this season to boost his confidence. It follows on the back of disappointments felt with the Squadra Azzura and with Napoli losing out on the title. Both teams, however, have a star player for years to come.

Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter Milan) – 1184 points

For much of the season, Hakan Calhanoglu was the most impressive player in Serie A. His skill, leadership, and important goals contribute to Inter heading into the final round with the chance of defending the title. While success wasn’t in the cards this time, Calhanoglu has confirmed his status with not one, but both of the great Milan teams.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio) – 1181 points

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has always appeared to be a little too good for this iteration of Lazio. But, this has not stopped him from stepping up every time that he has been required to do so. In a season where Lazio drifted under the command of Maurizio Sarri, Milinkovic-Savic was still the team’s most important player.

Antonio Candreva (Sampdoria) – 1137 points

Antonio Candreva just doesn’t know when to stop. The veteran midfielder brought his full repertoire and bag of tricks to Sampdoria’s disposal this season. He makes the Team of the Season on most lists, including our own.

Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) – 1072 points

Marcelo Brozovic is a classic playmaker with the intelligence of adapting to the modern game. The Croatian was just one of Inter’s superb group of players. While, arguably, Inter had the best midfield line in the country, Brozovic had to contend with second place for his team. Still, individual accolades can’t be denied. Brozovic returns to our Team of the Season.

Maxime Lopez (Sassuolo) – 1035 points

Sassuolo has become the Neural’s team in recent years. It is, largely, because they keep promoting incredible new players. The 24-year-old Frenchman, Maxime Lopez, has shown that he can cut in in Serie A. His passing has been a delight to watch. Now, it’s time for him to stake his reputation even higher.

Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo) – 1080 points

Domenico Berardi was one of Italy’s best players when they won Euro20. With this in mind, many were surprised to see the supremely talented advanced playmaker continuing to wear Sassuolo’s jersey. It didn’t bother Berardi at all though. He’s the player to earn the highest number of points as a forward in FootballCoin’s Serie A contests.

Gerard Deulofeu (Udinese) – 962 points

Gerard Deulofeu‘s move to Serie A became permanent this year. And, Udinese finally looks like the place where the talented Spaniard belongs. Deulofeu scored 13 goals and provided 5 assists this season. It’s a record that he will struggle to break. Still, there’s no better way to acknowledge this milestone than with a place on the Team of the Season.

Gianluca Caprari (Hellas Verona) – 931 points

Gianluca Caprari is a player at the top of his abilities at the moment. He’s a forward who takes his chances when he gets them, using his experience to best opponents. This season he scored 12 goals which offer him a consolation spot on our Team of the Season for the Serie A.
