The Champions League has returned and, for now at least, it remains the premier competition in European football. The continents’ top clubs are forced to line up at the start with teams almost, but not quite as famous. The difference in quality is not always obvious though. In fantasy football terms, let’s have a look at the top players in FootballCoin after Gameweek 1 of the UCL.

Sevilla’s Bounou is GW1’s top keeper

The balance of power has shifted in Spanish football. This has overflowed into international competitions. Sevilla is back in the UCL and performing well. The point they’ve earned against Austria’s Salzburg, near veterans of the competitions themselves, is not least owed to the safe hands of Bounou. The Moroccan is FootballCoin’s goalkeeper of GW1, ahead of Real Madrid Thibaut Courtois.

Garcia Ulisses determined to ruin Ronaldo’s night

Manchester United looked set to enjoy a glorious return to Champions League football. It was all working according to plan until Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s poor choice of tackle and instant dismissal. Swiss side BSC Young Boys, instead, ran away with the game and made Cristiano Ronaldo’s early goal redundant. Garcia Ulises was the home team’s best player on the night and the week’s best defender.

Shakhtar Donetsk impressive despite the loss

You may think of Shakhtar Donetsk as the Ukarinian team that features many Brazilian players. And, you’d be right. As expected they performed well on opening day with midfielder Maycon earning an incredible 71 points. His passing masterclass wasn’t enough though as Moldavian team Sheriff Tiraspol managed a historic 2-0 victory in their first game in the competition.

Sebastian Haller is back on track

The wheels looked to be spinning back when Haller was a West Ham United player. Since then, he has moved to Ajax Amsterdam and has been integrated into a tightly-knit, talented side. Haller was part of our tips for UCL GW1 and he did not disappoint. The striker scored four goals in Ajax’s thrashing of Sporting Lisbon. It’s safe to say that the wheels of Haller’s career are firmly back on track.
