Inter Milan have managed the transfer of one of football’s most experienced and sought after defenders, Diego Godin. The Uruguayan arrives in Serie A after a nine-year spell at Atletico Madrid. Here is what Godin may be able to offer his new club.
Experience at top level
Few players have had the opportunity of playing more high stake matches then Diego Godin. The 33-year-old has been one of Atletico’s leaders, in one of the club’s most successful periods. With Aleti, Godin has won La Liga, the Europa League twice, and has played the Champions League final on two occasions.
Inter’s performance sheet domestic or international, can certainly with improvement. The club looks towards the glory days of a decade ago and Godin’s experience can certainly assist in regaining some of their pride.
Tough man central defender
In many ways, Godin is one of the last few of a dying breed. His style of play favors highly physical, tackle-heavy football. It’s a no-nonsense approach that has worked under manager Diego Simeone.
While Inter’s central defensive partnership of de Vrij and Skriniar shows potential, their fourth-place finish last year shows that there is room for improvement. The transfer of Godin signifies that the club truly means business and is anxious to add squad depth in the pursuit of silverware.
Positive role-model
Inter is not without players that include significant achievements in their resume. However, the leadership potential in the dressing room has raised some eyebrows. Two of the club’s most influential players, Mauro Icardi and Radja Nainggolan have received their share of criticism for their behavior. Fears of this disrupting the team atmosphere are well-known.
Godin’s addition to the squad is hoped to bring in the type of leadership needed in order to win trophies. The Uruguayan is known as an active, disciplined and dedicated squad member. He can easily take on the roles of team leader, mentor and squad member.
