Atletico Madrid may have issued a hands off warning to La Liga champs Barcelona over forward Antoine Griezmann, but the club is considering options for a high-profile replacement.
Atletico Madrid are as much in the news recently for their pursuit of the runners-up position in La Liga, as well as for the persistent rumors about fan favorite Antoine Griezmann’s departure.
The forward, considered one of the best in Europe, has long been pursued by some of the world’s biggest clubs. Barcelona have aggressively upped the offers t and look more and more likely to sign the player come the end of the season.
Rivals Atletico are none too happy, of course, going so far as to report the Camp Nou side to FIFA. “We’re fed up with Barcelona’s attitude. That a president, player and a board member speak the way they’ve done about the future of a player with an existing contract – and just a few days before contesting a European final – is an absolute lack of respect towards Atletico Madrid and its fans,” chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin was quoted by the club’s official website.
However, it looks that behind the scenes Atleti are preparing for the inevitable and looking for a suitable replacement. First on the list is another high-profile striker, Edinson Cavani, a top performer in Ligue 1 for PSG.
Despite the Uruguayan becoming the club’s best ever scorer, his mid-season conflicts with new arrival, and top club priority, Neymar, seem to have added unneeded pressure for the player. Cavani has been quick to squash the rumors and announce his commitment to the Parisian side. But football fans will be well accustomed to big money negotiations weighing heavily on transfer decisions.
