Euro 2024 is set to bring together the best players of the best teams on the European continent. Sadly, this has meant that some of the world’s biggest stars won’t be taking part. Some have been left by their managers off of the squad lists, some are injured or even banned, while others simply failed to qualify.
This is a list of all of the biggest football stars that are set for Euro 2024. Each of the games in the tournament will be hosted in FootballCoin fantasy contests!
Star Players Set to Miss Euro 2024
Biggest Names Out of the Tournament
The biggest stars to miss Euro 2024 due to their standard of performance generally belong to the tournament’s top teams. Simply put, the likes of France, England and Germany have had plenty of talent to choose from.
There’s also the case of teams like Belgium and Italy looking to change to a new generation of players and the Czech Republic making changes for disciplinary reasons.
Southgate and Deschamps Forced to Be Ruthless
England’s Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, or Reece James haven’t been made of the provisional squads. Rashford was unable to sustain the form he enjoyed last season. Former captain Henderson has ping-ponged between the Saudi League and Eredivisie, not impressing in either. James hasn’t played for most of the season.
France has the most impressive squad of the lot. That’s how Didier Deschamps has opted to move forward without Michael Olise, Lucas Hernandez, Christopher Nkunku, Jean-Philippe Mateta, or Matteo Guendouzi.
If Guendouzi and Hernandez’s performances might mean that their time for Les Bleues could be up, Olise, Nkunku or Mateta are set to be considered for the future. Meanwhile, Wesley Fofana and Boubacar Kamara still have long-term injuries.
There’s also the matter of Paul Pogba‘s doping ban. However, in truth, the former Manchester United midfielder has been out of Deschamps’ plans for quite a while now.
Belgium and Italy’s Changing of the Guard Moments
Belgium is going through a generation change. But that’s not the reason that Thibaut Courtois is missing. The goalie suffered a new injury recently. Meanwhile, Romeo Lavia may have cost Chelsea a fortune, but little he has done in the EPL this season warranted a call-up.
Portugal has a balanced squad of veterans and talented up-and-comers. But Raphael Guerreiro, Anthony Lopes, Jose Fonte, William Carvalho, or Pedro Goncalves just missed the EUro 2024 squad. Guerreiro, for example, has not enjoyed a spectacular season with Bayern Munchen, and more in-form players have been preferred. It’s the case with all of these players.
Spain is always one of the most interesting teams to watch. The provisional squad has not yet been announced. But we know that a long-term injury will force Gavi out of Euro 2024. It’s a real shame.
Italy, on the other hand, was the last tournament’s winner. However, Squadra Azzura shockingly missed out on World Cup 2022. Luciano Spalletti has thus felt the need to change things up. Ciro Immobile, Manuel Locatelli, Marco Verratti are not on the plane to Germany.
Immobile and Verratti’s call-ups look to be a thing of the past. Immobile remains dependable for Lazio but has rarely performed for Italy on big occasions. Meanwhile, Verrati’s move to Al-Arabi means that he is being overshadowed by other midfielders playing in Europe. Meanwhile, Manuel Locatelli’s move to Juventus has failed to turn him into a Serie A star, as he’s enjoyed a bang-average season.
Nagelsmann Willing to Take Chances
Germany hosts the tournament and looks anxious to put behind them the disappointment of the recent World Cup. It remains to be seen how much time Julian Nagelsmann will be afforded as manager of Die Mannschaft. But he’ll take the plunge in Euro 2024 without Mats Hummels, Leon Goretzka, Niklas Sule, Emre Can, Julian Brandt, Serge Gnabry.
Hummels led Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final. However, fresh legs are preferred after Germany’s recent setback in international tournaments. The same goes for Sule, or Can.
Bayern’s Bundesliga run means that the team’s former manager, Nagelasmann, cannot justify having so many of its players called up. Goretzka or Gnabry are victims of this but may return to future squad lists.
Meanwhile, Julian Brandt and Karim Adeyemi haven’t developed into elite players status. Like England’s Jadon Sancho, they are, for now, not included in their respective national teams’ squads.
