The English fantasy football Championship is hard to predict ahead of time and difficult to follow while it’s happening. But, for once, the top teams showed their strengths early and delivered throughout the campaign. That’s why you’ll find plenty of players belonging to the top clubs in the league in FootballCoin’s Championship Team of the Season.
Who was on your team? And, who’ll be on your radar for next season?
The 2024/2025 Team of the Season in the EFL Championship
Goalkeeper
Viktor Johansson (Stoke City)
Viktor Johansson wasn’t merely the best Stoke City player in another disappointing campaign, or the best goalkeeper in the Championship. Stats-wise, Johansson was the best fantasy football player all around in the entire league.
That’s impressive, especially considering Stoke finished 18th and conceded 62 goals, while scoring 45. The Swede is the classic “goalkeeper who’ll do a job.” Premier League might want to get their people on the line right now.
Defenders
Jayden Bogle (Leeds United) – 590 points
Leeds outscored all other teams and registered the second-best defensive record in the league. Fans can thank Jayden Bogle for both of these stats. The wing-back managed six goals and four assists, all while pulling 2.2 tackles per game (the most of any other Leeds player).
After an excellent campaign for the defender, Bogle will be excited about his ability in the Premier League next season. Make sure that you scout him closely for your fantasy football teams.
Connor Roberts (Burnley FC) – 532 points
Experience was part of the secret to Burnley’s success. The performances of Connor Roberts are a prime example. While the defender consistently put in strong stats, there’s nothing that stands out. Roberts contributed enough, both defensively and in attack, for Burnley to capture 100 points this season.
Josh Tymon (Swansea City) – 532 points
Swansea improved in the latter part of the season. The same thing happened to Josh Tymon‘s performances, who managed three assists for his team’s three goals in the final game of the season. A good crosser of the ball and dependable with his passing, Tymon should be another player worth picking next season.
Joe Rodon (Leeds United) – 495 points
Joe Rodon is a meat-and-potatoes kind of defender, but a sensational one as that. He’s back in the Premier League in 2025, the top league in the world, where he has also played for Swansea and Tottenham.
And he’s been the leader of this fantastic Leeds United defence without overstraining himself. Rodon scored one goal, made 0.6 tackles per game, and barely ever hit a long pass all season. But nearly all of the team’s attacks start with Rodon, and nearly all of his short passes are successful. That’s enough to warrant a place on the Team of the Season.
Midfielders
Josh Brownhill (Burnley) – 674 points
In fairness, you probably expected Josh Brownhill to do well in the Championship. He was, after all, an important component of the team that won the same competition three seasons ago.
You just didn’t want him to become quite the goalscorer he has. At 29 years of age, the midfielder is at the peak of his powers. He has just scored 18 goals, and you’ll want to watch closely if this run of form continues in the big leagues.
Gustavo Hamer (Sheffield United) – 628 points
It was nearly a perfect 2024/2025 campaign for Gustavo Hamer. Sheffield United may have just missed out on the Premier League for next season, losing the Championship Playoffs against Sunderland, but fans had plenty to cheer for this season.
Hamer scored 10 goals and assisted another 8, and was genuinely a joy to watch. A rarity for the Championship, the Dutchman based his game on tricky through balls and finishes delivered with flair.
And while he won’t be in the EPL with Hamer next season, other teams will come scouting, and so should you for your future Premier League team.
Brenden Aaronson (Leeds) – 603 points
Leeds returns triumphantly to the EPL after winning the EFL Championship. Among other things, fans will remember this as the season when Brenden Aaronson came good on the promises of yesteryear. The midfielder scored or assisted in 11 goals. Aaronson was also one of the team’s more creative players. At 24 years of age, there is natural excitement about his potential return to the EPL.
Josh Windass (Sheffield Wednesday) – 581 points
Less successful than their city rivals, Wednesday have still put in a few memorable performances this season. Josh Windass was a consistent addition to FootballCoin’s Team of the Week.
The English attacking midfielder scored 13 goals and assisted 5. It’s really no surprise that the player would rather join Valencia in the Summer. After all, the Bats will be playing the first tier, and that looks a long while away for Wednesday.
Forwards
Jaidon Anthony (Burnley FC) – 638 points
Ok, hold on! I know you might be surprised to see Jaidon Anthony featuring as the top Championship forward for fantasy football. But here’s how it works – Anthony is registered by Opta as a striker, although, more specifically, he has played as an attacking winger. He’s scored 8 goals as compared to teammate Brownhill (registered as a midfielder), who has scored 18.
However, Anthony was an integral part of Burnley’s season in which, like Leeds, they promoted to the Premier League with a whopping 100 points. Anthony also provided 7 assists, took 2.3 shots on goal per game, and was an all-around menace against Championship defences.
Joel Piroe (Leeds United) – 606 points
Where was Joel Piroe a few years back when Leeds needed someone like him scoring for them in the EPL? Well, as it turns out, he was back in the Championship playing for Swansea.
In the 2024/2025 edition, Piroe optimised his second-tier game and managed an incredible 19 goals. That makes him the top goalscorer in the Championship and one of fantasy football managers’ favourite players, surely.
