Atletico Madrid need to deal with a host of injured players in a vital stage of the season. Injuries for Nico Gaitan, Kevin Gameiro and Miguel Angel Moya will prevent them from playing in the following matches.

It’s the stage in the season where injuries affect most clubs. The teams with the highest squad depth are often the ones to triumph late in the season. Luckily, Atletico are one of the team’s with options for most positions. The team will travel to Malaga on Saturday.

The three players will undergo treatment at the club. The amount of time they will be absent is not yet clear.  Goalkeeper Moya and forward Gameiro’s injuries involve thigh problems. Gaitan will miss out on playing because of arthritis in his toe. A statement issued by the club discussed the players’ condition.

“An MRI scan was carried out on Moya on Thursday after the injury he suffered in training last Wednesday. The medical results show that our goalkeeper has suffered a muscle injury in the femoral biceps of the left thigh. He will face physiotherapy and rehabilitation treatment.”

“Argentine midfielder Nico Gaitan is suffering from arthritis in the metatarsophalangeal joint of the first toe of his left foot. As with Moya, he will undergo physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation.”

“Finally, Kevin Gameiro felt discomfort after the friendly match played in Paris between the national teams of France and Spain. Our striker has undergone an MRI scan that confirms that he is suffering from tendinitis in the adductor of his left thigh. He will also be put in the hands of our physios in order to return as soon as possible.”

Coach Diego Simeone will need to find alternatives ahead of a difficult schedule. After the game on Saturday, Atletico’s next games are against Real Sociedad and leaders Real Madrid. Atletico are ten points behind the Madrid side and are hoping to move up the table in the final stages of the season. Furthermore, Atletico continue their bid for the Champions League trophy. They will player in the Quarter-final stage against a revived Leicester City.

Under Diego Simeone Atletico has achieved great success in recent years.  the team won la Liga during the 2013-14 season, ahead of favorites Barcelona and Real. Also, Atletico were Champions League runners-up on two occasions.

Atletico was fortunate to keep manager Simeone and striker Antoine Griezmann for this season. Both were reportedly considering a move. The striker is still on the radar of teams such as Man United and Real Madrid. Atletico will now have to try to live up to to their recent track record.
