It’s still the best show in town this Champions League. Forget about the extraordinary number of games! Forget about the controversies surrounding some of the biggest teams in the competition! Or, at the very least, enjoy the spectacle for what it is.
But what about winning? What about showing your skill and character? Fantasy football Champions League has always been pretty good for this very thing.
I’ve been writing these fantasy football advice columns for nearly a decade. Here are some players, based on my experience, stats, and, frankly, hunches, who I think can dramatically improve your team.
Yes, and the place to do it is… FootballCoin. At least, in my estimation, it offers the most complete experience when considering scoring variables and prizes.
My Round 2 Fantasy Squad Reveal
Ah, the Swiss system. Is everyone taking part in Round 2 of the Champions League? Certainly, that’s more teams than you’re realistically supposed to know and care about.
Let me try to trim the fat for you. I am playing a 5-4-1. I am looking for bargain players. But I am also picking those stars that are UCL Big Night Specialists.
| Position | Player Name | Club | Card Tier | Why Included for R2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GK | Josep Martínez | Internazionale | 2★ – Free w/ lease | Messed up in R1. Unlikely to do it again. Best goalie for those looking to spare their budget. Brugge is a team against which Inter should keep a clean sheet. |
| DEF 1 | Archie Brown
|
Fenerbahce | 1★ – Free | The English left-back has been parachuted into a team of stars. Yet, he’s dealing well with the pressure, and could grow his reputation with a good performance against Villa
|
| DEF 2 | Rodrigo Riquelme
|
Betis | 2★ – Free w/ lease | This defender’s in form, so it’s Betis. The game against FC Porto arrives at just the right time for the Spanish team |
| DEF 3 | Virgil van Dijk
|
Liverpool | 5★ | Putting in a strong performance against Austria’s LASK Linz will be a matter of pride after the display against Man. City at the weekend. |
| DEF 4 | David Hanko |
Atletico | 2★ – Free w/ lease | Aggressive defender playing at his best. The Man. Utd. game really seems to suit his ability
|
| DEF 5 | Achraf Hakimi | PSG | 5★ | These days the Moroccan wing-back plays only where he’s most needed. He’s still, arguably, the best player in this role. He’ll likely prove this against Man. City
|
| MID 1 | Patrick Berg |
Bodo/Glimt
|
2★ – Free w/ lease | Berg has had a wild 12 months. How is he even still playing for Bodo/Glimt? In Round 2, the Norwegian can really shine
|
| MID 2 | Nicolas Jackson |
Aston Villa
|
2★ – Free w/ lease | Who thought Aston Villa would replace Watkins so quickly? Jackson is settling in. The match against Fener would be a real test
|
| MID 3 | Andy Diouf
|
Inter
|
2★ – Free w/ lease | Youngster who started the season well. He can play in numerous roles. Playing against Brugge could be just the game he needs to improve his confidence further
|
| MID 4 | Martin Ødegaard | Arsenal | 5★ | No team is in better form at the moment, and the Norwegian is their creative mastermind. The fixture against Lille also suits his abilities
|
| FW | Ousmane Dembele | PSG | 5★ | Dembele is now practically only used in big games. Playing against Man. City at this particular stage makes this a colossal game for symbolic reasons. Dembele tends to shine in matches like this
|
| AM |
Gareth
|
Retired AM | 5★ | A 5* Assistant Manager is a must-have |
3 Must-Have “Sleeper Picks” for R2
- Victor Osimhen (Striker) – He’s out to prove the world was wrong about him! The Nigerian will get to audition for FC Barcelona. It’s still not too late for him. I wouldn’t have much trust in any other striker at the moment against Barca. Osimhen is not just any ordinary forward.
- Zion Suzuki (Goalkeeper) – Give this Japanese a moment, and he’ll develop into a real talent. The start in the EPL and UCL hasn’t been easy. But against Fenerbahçe’s famous strikers (Greenwood, Asensio, Muriqi), I predict that he will do well. Have him on your radar!
-
Gianni Stensness (Midfielder) – He’s an Australian midfielder who has played everywhere. He’ll make the best of the opportunity to star in the UCL. I like his stats for Viking. If he manages to also do well in a game as difficult as the one that the team has coming up, then he’s one to remember, at least, for the group stage of the UCL
3 Star Players You Could Avoid
- Lisandro Martinez (Defender) – He’s been to two World Cup finals. He’s earned the praise of Jamie Carragher. But he also seems to get himself sent off and make mistakes that lead to goals. Can he stop Atletico Madrid’s defenders? I don’t think so!
- Rasmus Højlund (Striker) – It’s a tough old world. One day you’re the next Erling Haaland and the next the crowds are booing you. Frankly, it’s not been a good start to the season for Napoli. I don’t see things improving just yet, least of all against Villarreal.
- Arda Güler (Midfielder) – He’s skilful. He has the vision. But he’s also been playing for losing sides a lot recently. I like Güler, but I think that this AS Roma side has what it takes to stop him from being effective this time.
