My R3 Fantasy Squad Reveal

Yes, I’m choosing players based on three criteria: their form, their opposition’s form and their effect on my budget.

Once again, I am opting to go for a 5-4-1 formation.

Goalkeeper

Nikita Haikin (Bodo/Glimt) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Established, underrated Norwegian goalie takes on Rasmus Hojlund in the Champions League? My pick is for the Norwegian keeper.

Defenders

Benoit Badiashile (Napoli) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Badiashile is a defender that I’ve expected to become much more prevalent for a few years now. With Napoli being awful this year, the game against Bodo/Glimt will either restart the team’s season or bury it completely.

David Hancko (Atletico Madrid) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Hancko remains, likely, the best defender that you can get at this price point. Atleti’s performance against Manchester United last week makes me confident more of the same is on the way.

Jacobo Ramon (Como) – 3* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – If things go the way that I expect them to go, Manchester United will spend a lot of the time against Como desperately looking for a goal. That’s when Jacobo Ramon’s defensive acumen will be most handy.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Playing against Harry Kane and the rest of Bayern’s strong attackers is just the kind of test that Lewis-Skelly needs. It’ll be tough, but I predict he’ll pass it.

Frederik Bjorkan (Bodo/Glimt) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Can Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt still be considered a surprise entry after the past two seasons that they’ve had in European competitions? Not exactly! Still, Frederik Bjorkan is a pretty underrated pick whose form, I think, makes him a strong option for Round 3 of UCL fantasy football.

Midfielders

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Manchester City) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – City paid a fortune for him. He’s tasked with being “The New Rodri.” Last week’s performance in the EPL makes these claims worth taking seriously.

Johnny Cardoso (Atletico Madrid) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – It takes a particular kind of player to excel at Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. From what I’ve seen, Cardoso has nearly all the qualities needed for that.

Niccolò Pisilli (AS Roma) – 2* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – You can’t argue with the price tag, and certainly not with the kind of opposition (Slovan) AS Roma is facing. Besides that, Roma is in the best form it has been in years, and this 22-year-old is working hard to make himself indispensable.

Nico Paz (Como) – 3* and Free 2/ lease in FootballCoin – Paz has announced himself as one of the most dynamic attacking midfielders in world football. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s defenders, who Paz will face, have made themselves known as some of the sluggish and most error-prone in the game. I’d take a chance on picking him this time.

Forwards

Donyell Malen (AS Roma) – 3* in FootballCoin – Malen was nearly the hero last week against Real Madrid. The Dutchman is in top form. Slovan Bratislava, with all due respect, simply look to me like the perfect victim. Why not choose a striker with scoring prospects as good as Malen’s?

3 Must-Have “Sleeper Picks” for R3

Ilman Ndiaye (Midfielder) – There were some who were surprised by City’s decision to bring in Ndiaye in the Summer. The midfielder not only has EPL experience, but the team simply plays better when he’s on the pitch. That means that he’s a player worth focusing on ahead of this UCL fixture.

Patrick Berg (Midfielder) – He was in Norway’s World Cup squad. He’s Bodo/Glimt’s most famous player. And he’s somehow still playing in Scandinavia. I think that his individual qualities can really shine through in a game against an out-of-form Napoli.

Nicolo Tresoldi (Striker) – General consensus seems to be that Tresoldi could be “the next big thing” and that his time in Brugge will be short. He’s already scored four goals in the first two weeks of UCL action. The game against Lens feels perfectly suited for his skill set.
