Manchester United have confirmed that world-class striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will re-sign with the club on a one-year deal.

It’s the news that fans of the Red Devils were dying to hear. In recent weeks Jose Mourinho, the team’s manager, as well as Ibrahimovic himself alluded to the possibility that following his full recuperation, the player would once again sign for the club.

The Swedish striker arrived in Manchester at the start of last season as a free player after having won Ligue 1 titles in succession with PSG. The player quickly proved himself and in a team filled with top talent, Ibrahimovic became perhaps the team’s biggest asset. Sadly a knee injury robbed the striker of the opportunity to play the Europa League final in his home country. With a good deal of uncertainty regarding his future, the club did not renew his contract.

The player remained in tight contact with Man. Utd. and even completed his recuperation period at the club’s grounds. Several teams publicly declared their interest in signing the player once he was fully fit. However, United made no secret out of the fact that they were among the clubs interested. “After his contribution last season he deserves our trust and we will be patient waiting for him to return,” said manager Jose Mourinho.

The pessimistic predictions that Ibrahimovic might need to consider retirement were proved wrong by the player who is expected to have a full bill of health very soon. United has confirmed that the striker has agreed to rejoin the team on a one year deal. Ibra inherits the number 10 jersey from former team captain Wayne Rooney and joins Romelu Lukaku in strengthening the team’s attack.

“I am back to finish what I started,” Ibrahimovic tells Manchester United’s official web site. He goes on to say that his plan has always been to return to the team and that club put him under no pressure in speeding up his recovery. “It was always mine and the club’s intention for me to stay. I cannot wait to get back out on that Old Trafford pitch, but I also know that I have to take my time to make sure that I am ready. I have been working hard and will continue to do so to make sure I am in the best possible condition for my return to the pitch.”

Previous to his injury Ibrahimovic was the team’s top scorer. And while Man. Utd., as well as most important Premier League teams have improved their squad during the summer break, the former Sweden international could prove to be United’s biggest step forward. Should the team be spared injuries and suspensions, Jose Mourinho’s team may be one of the top contenders to win the Premier League title. And as Ibrahimovic’s return to the beautiful game now seems to be weeks away, we at FootballCoin couldn’t be happier.
