Will Klopp’s Liverpool reach Wenger’s Arsenal invincible status?

“The Invincibles” is a nickname used everywhere in the world to describe a football team who have gone unbeaten throughout a full season. Where else can this feat be more valuable than in the Premier League? This year the ones to watch are Liverpool managed by Jurgen Klopp.v

The Invincibles, Premier League’s legendary team who went unbeaten 49 matches in a row, including a full season, 26 wins and 12 draws in the 2003-2004 season. That was Arsenal under the management of Arsene Wenger.

Many have said that the feat will never be repeated again. Right now Liverpool looks on the path to achieving this iconic status. This is not about the recent win against the rivals Manchester City, it is the style of play, the team spirit and the manager, the man himself Jurgen Klopp.

Anfield has become a fortress, Liverpool has been unbeaten there in 46 league games. The incredible run extends back to April 2017 when Crystal Palace managed to walk away with a 2-1 win. This means that for nearly two and a half seasons Klopp’s side on Anfield enjoyed 36 wins and 10 draws, in an impeccable run.

Of course we are 12 rounds into the season and maybe it is too early to make such a comparison, but nothing is impossible for the manager, who described himself as “the normal one”, and for his team.

A brief comparison between the Invincibles and the Reds

Wenger started the Invincible season in a 4-4-2 formation that easily switched in-game into a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1. The French manager wasn’t keen to use a player rotation system, keeping the team almost the same throughout the campaign. Having strong midfielders who covered the defense perfectly, Vieira dominated the midfield constantly, and with Henry scoring consistently, the Highbury crowd saw the team lifting the unique golden EPL trophy at the season’s end.

Liverpool lines up in a 4-3-3, Fabinho doing a great job as a holding midfielder, Trent and Robertson playing up wide becoming proper wingers, and Salah-Mane’s attacking partnership being the best in the league right now. Also not a big fan of constant rotation, Klopp has masterfully built the best team in England since The Invincibles, the only question remains if they will finish the season unbeaten.

Wenger’s legacy and Klopp’s legend in the making

“Somebody threw me a T-shirt after the trophy was presented which read ‘Comical Wenger says we can go the whole season unbeaten.’ I was just a season too early!” Arsene Wenger said in 2004. The brilliant manager knew where his team stood, his flair anticipated the unique feat coming.

On the other side, Liverpool comes after a 2018-2019 season where they only lost only once, away against their bitter rivals Manchester City 2-1. Being crowned UEFA Champions League winners and gathering the most points in the history of the EPL (97) for a team that finished in only 2nd place, the Reds learned the lesson and it is very unlikely they will give away another loss this season. Looking stronger in defense now, Matip and Fabinho providing real plus for the team, all the players have the maturity needed to accomplish the Invincible status.
