Former Manchester United midfielder David Beckham has shared his opinion about Alexis Sanchez. “I still find it hard to believe it’s actually happened. It’s amazing,” Beckham tells reporters.
Big shoes to fill for Sanchez
Manchester United has seen its share of great players wearing the Number 7 jersey. Eric Cantona, George Best, David Beckham have all worn the famous shirt. Alexis Sanchez will now get his chance to sport the jersey and expectations are clearly high.
David Beckham, one of United’s most iconic players, gave his take on the transfer. Sanchez was long rumored to be insisting on a move away from Arsenal, refusing to sign an extension with the club. The Chilean was initially linked to a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City, before their arch-rivals, United, made a swoop for the player. Alexis Sanchez’s move has made the forward the highest earning player in the Premier League, grossing around £500,000 per week before tax.
David Beckham remains optimistic about Sanchez
Speaking to the Mirror, Beckham showed optimism at the deal. He says he was taken by surprise that the transfer actually went through, adding that he believes Sanchez will be a success at his Premier League club.
“I still find it hard to believe it’s actually happened. It’s amazing,” Beckham tells reporters.
“A player of his stature and calibre has obviously come from a big club like Arsenal and then to move to a massive club like Manchester United, that for me makes me proud to be a Manchester United player because we want great players and exciting players. It’s great to see him wear a United shirt and I’m sure he’s going to be successful.”
David Beckham’s career at United has been stock full of trophies and distinctions. During his 11 year stay at the club, the winger won the Premier League trophy six times and the Champions League trophy once. Beckham is currently in the middle of promoting his own team, MLS Miami.
Manchester United is currently second in the league, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City. Alexis Sanchez is expected to take the pitch for United in the derby against Tottenham. Red Devil fans will, naturally, be anxious to see the club’s new offensive line featuring Sanchez and Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.
