Forget tradition! Belgian Pro League fantasy football was one wild ride this season. That’s mostly because the title was won by a team that hadn’t secured the trophy in 90 years, and plenty of other surprises occurred along the way.
Did you call them? How well did your fantasy football team perform this season, and which of the top players did you have on your team?
These are the Team of the Season in the 2024/2025 Belgian Pro League, players you’ll want to consider for future fantasy campaigns.
The 2024/2025 Belgian Pro League Team of the Season
Goalkeeper
Anthony Moris (Union Saint-Giloise)
Anthony Moris already looked like a top keeper when the regular Jupiler League season ended. After all, Union had the best defensive record in the league.
But it was his heroics in the playoffs that secured the Brussels team the first title in 90 years. Whisper it quietly, but Luxembourg’s gotta. helluva keeper.
Defenders
Maxim de Cuyper (Club Brugge)
Club Brugge was the favourite to win the league title, of course. And, for much of the regular season, they were the most formidable team.
Cracks began to show toward the end of the campaign. Still, Maxim de Cuyper, already a regular of the national team, was great with important tackles, clearances and passing throughout the campaign.
Brandon Mechele (Club Brugge)
Brandon Mechele matched the energy and commitment of his younger defensive partners. The 32-year-old played 40 games, seemed to win every aerial duel and proved to be a true leader. Next campaign, he’ll be just be one season better.
Toby Alderweireld (Royal Antwerp)
Toby Alderweireld is a modern legend of the Belgian game. And, thankfully, his transfer to Royal Antwerp, his first season playing in Belgium, was never an embarrassment. There were few better playing defenders in the top European leagues this season.
Christian Burgess (Union Saint-Giloise)
Christian Burgess could’ve eventually had a strong career in the Premier League. Instead, the Englishman can now boast to having won the Belgian Pro League with Union Saint-Giloise. Strong tactically and capable of out-jumping most strikers, Burgess makes FootballCoin’s Team of the Season.
Midfielders
Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge)
You already know it! Hans Vanaken is an incredible midfielder and a real asset to the Belgian Pro League’s strategy of acquiring viewership. There’s little surprise that Vanaken makes the TOTS, or that he’s scored 21 goals this season and contributed 25 assists overall. All of that’s to be expected.
Thibo Somers (Cercle Brugge)
Is there any position where Thibo Somers can’t play? Very few, certainly. Somers was excellent this season, taking on numerous roles for Cercle Burges and doing well in just about all of them. If he manages to increase his goal tally next season, he’ll be the Player of the Season.
Rob Schoofs (Yellow-Red KV Mechelen)
KV Mechelen didn’t make the playoffs. That feels particularly unfair for players like Rob Schoofs, the 31-year-old midfielder who scored 6 goals and provided 5 assists. Great at passing and hard to defend against his long-range shots, Schoofs had a strong campaign.
Daan Heymans (Royal Charleroi)
It was a pretty unremarkable campaign for the once royally praised Royal Charleroi. However, Daan Haymans made some of the supporters’ trip to the old ground worthwhile. Heymans netted 11 goals this campaign, besides proving one of the best pivots in the league.
Forwards
Vincent Janssen (Royal Antwerp)
Vincent Janssen is the kind of striker that major clubs spend years trying to sign. At 30, Janssen is just now reaching his full potential. He scored 10 goals, provided 6 assists, and never once minded the fact that the team never seemed to have a shot at the title. What a trooper!
Toluwalase Emmanuel Arokodare (KRK Genk)
Tolu Arokodare is a player that we’ve discussed before. A powerful striker just finding his stride, Genk’s 24-year-old has been a goal-scoring machine. Will we be seeing him in Ligue 1, or maybe even the Premier League, soon? Will you be selecting him for your fantasy football next season?
