Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho talked about his decision to rest some important players. Some of the changes have appeared in the game against Tottenham. Further changes may occur in the last games of the season.
It is noted that Manchester United has struggled with injuries and bans in the second part of the season. The team is fighting for two main objectives. United is trying to end the campaign in one of the top four positions in the Premier League. United is also going to play the Europa League final against Ajax.
Victory in the Europa League would guarantee the team’s presence in next season’s Champions League. It certainly seems like this is the more realistic scenario at this stage to gain entry into the competition. United goes against tough rivals Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal for a top place in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho often talked about the dificulties United has had in the selection of their team for the second part of the season. He says it is necessary to rest some of the key players even if this may cost the team points in the league.
“The thinking is we have other good players, we have people that need and deserve to play and people that need and deserve to rest,” Mourinho told Sky Sports ahead of the game against Tottenham.
“We are going to do this in this last week, these last three matches we are going to try not to accumulate too many minutes with any one of the players. So we have lots of changes in relation to the last match and in the next match we will have a lot of changes in relation to this match.”
Mourinho is confident that the players he will be choosing to start will be up to the challenge. “To be honest I think in the Premier League lately the results are not the best – we lost at Arsenal ending that unbeatable run we drew at home to Swansea.”
“So I don’t think it is about results I think it is more about the condition to arrive in Stockholm in the best possible conditions to compete against a team that today plays their last match and has 10 days without football just to prepare the match. I want to give the players the best conditions to try to go to the final.”
