Pep Guardiola - Manchester City

Manchester United followed up on the sensational last week victory against City, with a home defeat against relegation bound West Bromwich Albion. The result coupled with City’s own victory over Spurs was enough to make Guardiola’s side officially the Premier League champions.

Manchester United lost to last place West Brom to help hand Manchester City the title. It’s been a brilliant season , one in which the team has lost on only two occasions. Manager Pep Guardiola has successfully shaped his team to fit his tactical vision. Many doubted he would manage the same success he enjoyed at Barcelona and Bayern. However, in only his second season in the Premier League, he has constructed the competition’s best best.

What lead to City’s EPL victory

Raheem Sterling - Manchester CityThe team was remarkably consistent throughout the year, managing to win against the league’s biggest teams and not squandering points against lower opposition. Benefiting from a number of high profile teams, City started strong out of the gates winning all  but two of their games end of 2017.

Guardiola says that he was confident of winning the competition back in September when City won against former champions Chelsea. The other rival teams, United, Liverpool and Tottenham, were left trailing the Citizens and kept at a significant distance for the entire season.

United’s slip up hands City the title

It could’ve been made official last week when the two Manchester clubs met. United did well to come back from two goals down and won 3-2. It was a great second half display from Mourinho’s men. If fans were hoping for a renaissance, their hopes were obliterated by this Sunday’s woeful display against West Brom. EPL’s last placed team won by a 1-0 scoreline in a match otherwise uneventful.

Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City

Manchester City had managed to win their Saturday encounter against Tottenham by 3-1. With a 16 point difference and five matches remaining, Pep Guardiola’s side can be handed the medals. The difference in points speaks volumes of City’s accomplishment, especially given the high quality level of the teams, which has made the Premier League the highest viewed football competition in the world in recent years.

Guardiola and his team deserve the accolades they are bound to receive come the end of the season. At the same time, the manager knows the team has to improve to not only maintain their grip on the Premier League, but to stand a better chance of winning the Champions League next year.

“We have to try. If you read what the people say this week we have to improve. But you cannot deny that we were good this season. Every single day. To make 18 games in a row winning you have to be mentally strong,” Guardiola told reporters.
