Juventus will be looking to maintain the Serie A top spot with victory in their tricky fixture against AC Milan. Elsewhere, Napoli will hope to keep their Scudetto dreams alive when they travel to Sassuolo.
It’s not often that a club ends dominates one of the top European leagues for a series of successive years. In some ways we are all better for it. The top leagues have acquired this status particularly because of their ability to provide numerous high-quality teams. But Juventus has managed to hold Serie A in a vice grip in recent years, winning six consecutive titles.
There seemed to be no real competition for Juventus in recent years. That is until this season when Napoli emerged as a serious threat. Was the tide finally turning? Perhaps the best news of all is that, for the most part, Juve has not decreased in stature. Rather, Napoli has managed to step up to the challenge.
Tough fixture for Juventus against Milan
And so ahead of matchday 30, Juventus finds itself only 2 points ahead of Napoli and having to battle it out against an old rival, AC Milan. Juve expect a difficult encounter against an adversary on the rise under the tough guidance of Gennaro Gattuso. In fact, the vacuum of power left by the two Milanese teams in recent seasons has been one of the contributing factors to Juventus’ continued success. Fresh investors and a renewed confidence could soon put Juve’s winning streak to an end.
Napoli has lead the chase for the Serie A for much of the season. Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne, Marek Hamsik have turned out to be some of the league’s top players. The dream has weighed a bit heavy perhaps. Just as the goal seemed realistic, Napoli started losing points and now are in second place, in the final stretch of the season.
Experience vs. enthusiasm
“Juventus are a team with much more experience, as the many titles they’ve won in the last few years prove. I think the job Napoli are doing is very interesting in terms of the type of football they are playing and also because they are forcing Juventus to raise their level in this championship. It’s evident they are the two best sides in Italy at the moment and I’m sure they will compete until the end,” former Juventus striker David Trezeguet says.
Indeed it looks like this could be a race that could go all the way to the final segments of the season. Juventus plays Napoli on April 22 on the Allianz Stadium. Another Serie A legend, former Argentine striker Hernan Crespo shares the same opinion.
“For the title race I think Juventus have a double advantage. They have more points and they know how to win the Scudetto. Napoli lack a bit of experience but they are having an amazing championship. It would be nice for Italian football if Napoli could win. I think that Juventus-Napoli could be decisive.”
