Serie A is renowned for its teams’ tactical knowledge and defensive organization. This has meant that in 2023, we were treated to a number of performances of the highest level, some of the best coming from the goalkeepers.

After crunching the numbers and applying the all-important eye test, these are the best Serie A goalkeepers for 2023.

The Best Serie A Goalkeepers in 2023

Pietro Terracciano (Fiorentina)

Pietro Terracciano has been one of many smart signings made by Fiorentina over the last years as the team has struggled with a sizeable rebuild. The keeper has slowly managed to earn the respect of fans and peers. This season, he has registered a save percentage of 84.9%. It is the second-best record in Serie A.

Michele Di Gregorio (Monza)

Michele Di Gregorio was just one year ago a goalkeeper who had been constantly on loan from Inter Milan since 2017, and a player who had never had a chance of starting a Serie A game.

But things have changed. At the tail-end of 2023 he has earned a starting place for the newly promoted Monza. And, at the time of writing, Di Gregorio is the keeper with the highest number of saves this season in the Italian first tier.

While it is unlikely that he will continue to fly under the radar for most fans, Michele Di Gregorio has earned a spot on the list of the best Serie A goalkeepers of 2023.

Lorenzo Montipo (Hellas Verona)

Lorenzo Montipo seems primed to become the kind of keeper known for his dependability and consistency. Sure, playing for Verona does also involves putting in a lot more work than what the goalies presenting the top sides might get. But, especially over the past year, he has proven to have what it takes to be considered among the league’s best.

Wladimir Falcone (Lecce)

It’s not easy to get yourself noticed for the right reasons while playing goal for a team of Lecce’s statute. But this is just what Wladimir Falcone has managed to do in 2023.

Falcone, who until 2022 has spent most of his career in the lower divisions, ranks highly for saves and for post-shot expected goals. He is also quite good with the goal at his feet. All of this has helped Lecce to a surprising mid-table performance so far, and has helped to justify the 5 million euro that the club has spent on his transfer.

Vanja Milinković-Savić (Torino)

Vanja Milinković-Savić is a bit of a wild character but also a highly committed individual. Like his famous brother, Sergej, the younger sibling has been known to put in the occasional extraordinary performance.

But he is quite consistent as well. In 2023, Milinkovic-Savic has improved. For clean sheets, successful goal kicks, crosses stopped, or touches, he ought to be ranked as one of the best in the world, and, certainly, as one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A in 2023.

Andre Onana (Inter Milan)

Andre Onana, of course, earned a big money transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2023. And let’s just say that things have not worked out just yet.

But it would not be fair to fail to mention him as one of the best Serie A keepers of 2023. Onana’s dependability helped Inter to second place in the league with the keeper registering a 74% save rate and to the runners-up spot in the Champions League.

Alex Meret (Napoli)

Alex Meret is an incredible goalkeeper, but despite his gifts, he is often overlooked. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that Napoli, the team that won its first Scudetto after a 33-year wait, had so many breakout stars in 2023.

Victor Osimhen, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia may get most of the headlines, but Meret has been keeping the fort safe.

And, while in the 2023/24 season, Meret has a save percentage of 64% at a 28% clean sheet rate, the heroics of last season are still fresh in the minds of football fans.

Wojciech Szczęsny (Juventus)

Wojciech Szczęsny once replaced the legendary Gianluigi Buffon as Juventus’ starting goalkeeper. This alone ought to prove just how good he really is.

But, yes, his time in Turin has not been without its ups and downs. Juve was in plenty of trouble on and off the field last season. Still, Szczęsny‘s record is strong. His 47.5% clean sheet percentage over the last year is one of the best records in any of the biggest top five leagues.

Yann Sommer (Inter Milan)

Yann Sommer may not be a fan favorite of the Inter Milan fans just yet. Still, his record speaks for itself, and the Swiss may yet be deemed a suitable replacement for Andre Onana.

At the tail-end of 2023, Inter Milan leads the Serie A table with a four-point lead. The team has the best defensive record in the league. Sommer has the greatest save percentage, the best clean sheet percentage, and has the fewest goals against over 90 minutes. Sometimes, numbers do speak for themselves.

Mike Maignan (AC Milan)

Mike Maignan is indispensable to AC Milan. His 2021 injury and the Rossoneri’s inability to properly replace him or secure another title clearly proved that.

The former Lille goalie is not only a claiming presence to his teammates. His stats have him in the top 20% of global goalkeepers for most important stats, and with him fit, AC Milan is again one of Italy’s strongest sides.
