The “Locks” – Players You Need
Brazil – Morocco
Nobody’s optimistic about Brazil this time. Then again, this is a team coached by Carlo Ancelotti and which features players from some of the biggest clubs in the world. Meanwhile, Morocco hopes to win the World Cup by 2030 when they host the tournament.
This is a proper early World Cup derby!
Alisson’s a great goalie pick, sure. I like Marquinhos and Roger Ibanez for the defender spots. I think that Casemiro and Lucas Paqueta, for various reasons, are likely to be the “meta” picks here. Raphinha is a luxury pick, and, besides also handles the penalties.
Morocco, on the other hand, has proven itself time and time again. Achraf Hakimi and Yassine Bounou are always worth considering for your fantasy football team. I think that Noussair Mazraoui and Chadi Riad can surprise in this one.
Haiti – Scotland
Scotland’s back at the World Cup. And the team’s return coincides with having a pretty impressive starting eleven.
Scott McTominay, Ryan Christie, Che Adams and Andy Robertson are great picks for this fantasy football contest. Angus Gunn can keep a clean sheet, but won’t get much work to do, most likely.
However, Haiti’s Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Wilson Ilsidor are potential stars and could stun the Scots. In honesty, Haiti’s looked decent in friendly games.
South Korea – Czechia
I won’t lie. I love Czechia. Always have. But this is not a team that you want to back. The Czechs are lucky to have qualified. Meanwhile, South Korea is a determined, experienced team.
Son Heung-Min and Kang-In Lee were rested for the friendlies. But this is a perfect opportunity for them to put in a strong performance.
I think Pavel Sulc could be one of the tournament’s best young players. I also like Patrik Schick and veterans Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal. But I wouldn’t build my team around them.
Qatar – Switzerland
Switzerland is often a boring team to witness in these games. However, the Swiss have enough about them to secure a clear victory against Qatar.
This sounds like a game in which Dan Ndoye could shine. Meanwhile, defenders like Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi and Ricardo Rodriguez can get a lot of points from a meeting against Qatar.
The “Enablers” – Players that Might Surprise You
Mexico – South Africa
Look, we all know that opening World Cup games are boring. They’re especially dull if they involve South Africa.
Meanwhile, however, we’re also talking about Mexico, a team desperate to lift its curse of never advancing to the final stages of the tournament, and about getting local support to do it.
Gilberto Mora is, of course, the player to watch from this game. But this is mighty big pressure we’re talking about here, and picking him for fantasy football involves a risk.
Raul Jimenez could score here and is worth considering. Erik Lira impressed in the friendly against Serbia and should be the holding midfielder here. He might be worth your time.
Meanwhile, Ronwen Williams is a strong pick for goalie, especially considering all the work he’ll have to do here. Lyle Foster and Teboho Mokoena could have strong tournaments here.
Australia – Turkey
Personally, I think Turkiye is a little overrated. The team has three very famous players but not much consistency. Meanwhile, Australia, as always, is just happy to have qualified.
If the Turks are to win, Arda Guller and Baris Yilmaz will be decisive.
The “Shockers” – Players You Don’t Need, but Cannot Rule Out Entirely
Canada – Bosnia & Herzegovina
Canada’s kept promising that the team is better than we expect. For the most part, it’s been disappointing.
Bosnia & Herzegovina, on the other hand, are a team willing to fight anyone, at any hour, for a victory.
Bosnia’s Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Basic have been impressive throughout the qualification. It’s unclear whether Edin Dzeko will play in this one.
You expect that Alphonso Davies, Cyle Larin, and Jonathan David, Canada’s top stars, will perform better than last time around given the home support.
USA – Paraguay
Frankly, both these teams are lucky to be at this tournament. Still, I think Paraguay is the stronger side with a few undoubtedly talented players.
The USAMNT is a hard team to decipher. Christian Pulisic, Malik Tillman, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie should, technically, be among your top picks here. But Mauricio Pochettino’s team has often disappointed during the last couple of years.
Paraguay has done better than expected in the South American qualification rounds. This is not a team that many pundits back to do well. Still, players like Gustavo Gomez, Miguel Almiron and Alejandro Gamarra can bring real value to the game.
The “Traps” – Players You Should Avoid
No, Guillermo Ochoa won’t start for Mexico. It doesn’t matter how much we ask!
Neymar won’t start. Sure, he might make his way in the final minutes of the game against Morocco. But would you really like to pick on a player so prone to injuries?
I’m not fully convinced by Vinicius Jr. and Igor Thiago against Morocco’s defensive strength. Ismael Saibari can similarly struggle against Brazil’s defenders.
Hakan Calhanoglu is unlikely to play against Australia given a recent injury.
