Mauro Icardi is confident Inter can finish in the top three in Serie A and clinch a place in next year’s Champions League. A good run of form was ended by the 3-1 defeat against Roma on Sunday.
The legendary Italian side is desperate to play on the highest stage after a few seasons of subpar performances. Inter had climbed to fourth place after a good string of results. The loss against Roma has brought the team back to sixth place. They are now six points off third place Napoli.
With 12 games left to play this season, Icardi still believes in his team’s chances.
“We have to move on from the defeat versus Roma and look at the future,” Icardi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “We were on par with Roma throughout. We are not out of the race for third place just yet. We will not give up until we can no longer mathematically qualify.”
“I strongly believe that we can make third place, everyone believes we can make it. Our goal remains the same. We have a duty to keep trying and I am confident we can achieve our objectives.”
Mauro Icardi has impressed for Inter this season. The 23-year-old striker has scored 16 times in 25 appearances. However, some top clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona have vetoed the possible signing of the player due to his reputation off the pitch. Icardi has also made headlines for his animosity with Maxi Lopez and with the Inter Milan fans. Fans even boycotted the decision to make the striker team captain.

Icardi’s form hasn’t gone unnoticed with fans asking for the player to be called up for the Argentina national team. One of the strikers’ biggest supporters has been Argetina legend Mario Kempes. Kempes says that he sees a long future for Icardi at the national team. Icardi will however still have to face against the famous talent of the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Paulo Dybala.
